Context
A court-appointed assessor who inspects used cars at the buyer’s location before they sign anything. The service was sold over the phone, with all the friction that implies: calling during business hours, asking what each level of inspection covers, and invoicing afterwards.
The brief was to take the phone call out of the middle: let the buyer understand what each tier covers, buy it and pay for it on the site.
Approach
- Apple-style restraint applied to a sector that doesn’t use it. Large white serif over petrol blue, real photography of a handover, and three trust signals under the buttons. No car icons, no gradients.
- The service sold as a fixed product. Three inspection tiers, each with its scope written out — what gets checked, what report you receive — published as WooCommerce products. The buyer compares and decides without ringing up to ask what’s included.
- Payment taken at purchase via Stripe, with the option of a deposit instead of the full amount. The assessor doesn’t travel for free.
- Motion conditional per template. GSAP with ScrollTrigger only where it earns its place, and excluded entirely from forms and the checkout. On a screen where someone is entering payment details, animation is noise.
- PHP 8.2 with type hints and sanitisation on every input —
sanitize_*,wp_ksesand prepared statements. The forms collect number plates, phone numbers and addresses.
What I built
- Bespoke WordPress theme with its own design system in
theme.json - WooCommerce catalogue with the three inspection tiers and their detailed scope
- Stripe payments, deposit or full amount
- GSAP motion layer, conditional per template and honouring
prefers-reduced-motion - Technical SEO and a blog for organic acquisition
- Client-editable admin for content and pricing
Outcome
Live on its own domain: the buyer picks a tier, buys it and pays without a call first. Real-time availability is the next phase. The client edits content and prices from the WordPress dashboard without touching templates.
